Lean Academy

What Is Lean?

Lean is a growing, universal approach to eliminating waste and improving performance across many industries. It challenges organizations to proactively illuminate problems (waste) and performance issues from the perspective of the customer, identify the underlying processes impacting performance, and commit to continually improving those processes. Lean’s core tenant of Respect for People implores organizations to ensure every employee contributes and commits to continuously improving the processes they work to deliver.

About Lean Academy

Denver Health was one of the first healthcare delivery organizations to successfully adopt the Lean philosophy and methods with quantified success.  Regardless of one's industry, the Denver Health Lean Academy (DHLA) can kickstart their Lean journey by teaching the value of the Lean methodology and practices in a fun, fast-paced, interactive and engaging learning environment.

Lean training is ideal for leaders and learners in all fields, including but not limited to healthcare, banking, quality improvement, supply chain and government employees. There is great potential through Lean practice to improve customer care, reduce inefficiencies (Lean waste), and optimize systems for performance excellence.

DHLA’s Lean courses reflect Denver Health's progress on its never-ending, transformative Lean journey and helps learners understand the systems within and the successes achieved by Denver Health. DHLA currently offers multiple Lean Courses — from beginner to advanced.

The Value of Learning Lean at the Academy

DHLA instructors are not only in the classroom, but they are also actively deployed throughout the health system — solving the most pressing problems of the day. They boast a wide range of industry experience with backgrounds in engineering, higher education, manufacturing, government and social work, to name a few.

DHLA instructors average more than 10 years of hands-on Lean experience and have served more than 4,000 learners using adult-learning best practices, including:

  • Engaging learners in conversation and asking questions.
  • Supporting them in connecting personal experiences and knowledge to course content.
  • Providing opportunities for them to apply what they’ve learned to simulated activities.
  • Equipping them with tools that support the application of their learning.
