Alia Broman, MD
Pediatric Intensivist
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine
Dr. Alia Broman is a pediatric intensivist at Denver Health and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Broman earned her M.D. at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed her pediatrics residency at the University of California, Davis. She did her critical care fellowship training through Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and was an attending PICU physician at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque before joining the Denver Health family in 2023.
Dr. Broman is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care. Her clinical interests have included sepsis, traumatic brain injury, and palliative care, including developing curricula for pediatric residents for simulation training and palliative care, respectively. She has multiple publications, including serving as primary author on an article in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, examining perspectives on the use of palliative care teams in the PICU following cardiac arrest.
She loves outdoor activities, including watching Broncos games, cycling, and skiing with her family. Dr. Broman is thrilled to be back in the Mile High City as part of a team dedicated to providing exceptional care to those children who need it the most.
Claudia Kunrath, MD

Dr. Claudia Kunrath is a pediatric intensivist at Denver Health and an associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Kunrath is also the associate program director for the pediatric residency at the University of Colorado. Dr. Kunrath graduated from the University Federal de Ciencias da Saude de Porto Alegre Brazil in 1995. She completed pediatric residency and pediatric critical care in Brazil and trained again in the U.S. Her internship and residency were at the Oishei Children's Hospital in Bufalo. Subsequently, Dr. Kunrath completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She has been named "Top Doctor of Pediatric Critical Care" several times in Colorado and is a well-respected clinician, educator and community leader. Dr. Kunrath interests are medical education, patient safety and quality, trauma and community engagement. Dr. Kunrath speaks Portuguese, Italian and Spanish. Dr. Kunrath joined Denver Health in 2008.
Viswamitra Ragoonanan MD

Dr. Mitra Ragoonanan, who hails from the Caribbean, completed his medical studies at the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences in Trinidad and Tobago. He dedicated six years of his career to working in pediatrics and pediatric critical care there. He then came to the U.S. and completed pediatric residency and chief residency at Driscoll Children's Hospital/Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, followed by a pediatric critical care fellowship at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, UT Houston. He was recruited to Denver Health in July 2022 and joined faculty in Jan. 2023. Dr. Ragoonanan has interests in medical education, trauma, social determinants of health and expanding the field of pediatric critical care medicine in the Caribbean.
Katie Walsh

Dr. Katie Walsh is a pediatric intensivist at Denver Heath and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Walsh attended Albany Medical School where she graduated cum laude. She completed an internship, residency and chief residency at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Subsequently, Dr. Walsh completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital. She is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. Dr. Walsh is the co-director for simulation for the pediatric residency program at the University of Colorado. She is a well-respected simulation educator and researcher and has published her work in Academic Pediatrics and presented research nationally. Dr. Walsh has interests in medical education, simulation, delirium, patient safety and quality and palliative care. Dr. Walsh joined Denver Health full time in 2017.

Adam Beitscher, MD

Dr. Adam Beitscher is a hospitalist, caring for both adult and pediatric inpatients at Denver Health as well as working in the pediatric emergency department and urgent care center. He completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts after attending medical school at George Washington University. Dr. Beitscher is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and has an adjunct faculty appointment at Creighton University School of Medicine. He is a co-medical director of Denver Health’s Bio-Containment Unit, part of a national program to prepare and care for patients with high consequence infectious diseases. He is also co-medical director of a health equity program in the Dominican Republic run in partnership by Creighton University and a Dominican NGO. Dr. Beitscher has earned an excellent reputation as an educator and clinician and has interests in medical education, health equity, tropical medicine, and disaster preparedness. Dr. Beitscher joined Denver Health in 2018.
Zoe Bouchelle MD, MSHP

Dr. Zoe Bouchelle is a pediatric hospitalist at Denver Heath and an instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Bouchelle attended Harvard Medical School and completed an internship, residency, and chief residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Subsequently, Dr. Bouchelle completed a master's in health policy research at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a well-respected clinician and health services researcher and has published in Pediatrics, JAMA Pediatrics, and JAMA Health Forum. She serves on the Board of the Colorado Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Academic Pediatric Association. Dr. Bouchelle joined Denver Health in 2023.
Nick Breitnauer, MD
Internal Medicine & Pediatric Primary Care
Nick Breitnauer grew up in rural western Colorado, completed his undergraduate and medical school training at the University of Colorado at Boulder and then the Anschutz Medial Campus, and was lucky to stay here in Colorado for his med-peds residency!
He joined Denver Health in the fall of 2018 and works mainly as a primary care provider at the Federico Peña Family Health Center. His clinical duties also include working with residents in continuity clinic, inpatient attending on the pediatric wards/nursery, and serving as the medical director of the GLOBAL Adult Down Syndrome Clinic at Denver Health.
Breitnauer enjoys all things Colorado, especially skiing, camping, and the Denver Broncos. All other free time is spent with his wife, Brooke, and his children, Max (6) and Casey (3).
Richard (Rob) Broadhurst MD, MPH

Dr. Rob Broadhurst is an internal medicine and pediatric hospitalist at Denver Heath and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He also works clinically for the Public Health Institute at Denver Health, caring for adults and children in the Tuberculosis Clinic. Dr. Broadhurst attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency at the University of Colorado. Dr. Broadhurst completed a master's in public health at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. He is a researcher with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Tuberculosis Epidemiologic Studies Consortium. He is a member of both the Colorado Chapter of the American College of Physicians and American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Broadhurst joined Denver Health full-time in 2022.
Gregory Kennedy, MD
General Pediatrics, Senior Clinic Instructor, Outpatient and Inpatient Attending
Dr. Gregg Kennedy is a board-certified pediatrician and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He grew up in St. Louis, where he completed his undergrad degree at Washington University in St. Louis before finishing medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans. Gregg moved to Denver in 2015 to complete his training in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado and Denver Health. He now works full time at the Westside Clinic and his interests include nutrition and activity (he runs the MEND program at the Webb Clinic), social determinants of health, and mental health. He is fluent in Spanish, having spent significant time living and training in Latin America. In his free time, you can find him playing capoeira (a Brazilian martial art), riding his bike, and trying new recipes.

Dr. Rusha Lev is an outpatient pediatrician at Denver Health at Webb Pediatrics and attends on the inpatient wards several weeks each year. Dr. Lev is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She attended the University of Colorado Medical School and did her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland in Oakland, California. She has done primary care and inpatient hospital medicine at Denver Health since 2014 and also helped to start the Healthy Lifestyles Clinic at Denver Health. She is the clinical head of autism services at Denver Health as well. Dr. Lev is currently in a cohort of the American Pediatric Association Health Policy Scholars Program and is on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Pediatrics, Colorado Chapter. She is also the pediatric liaison for the Denver Health Longitudinal Intensive Clerkship for medical students at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Lev's has interests in lifestyle medicine and obesity, Kindergarten preparedness, autism and the importance of continuity in the care for patients transitioning from inpatient to outpatient.
Kristi Knuti Rodrigues, MD, MPH

Kristi Knuti Rodrigues, MD, MPH, is a board-certified pediatrician and an associate professor of pediatrics at Denver Health and University of Colorado School of Medicine. She was born in Denver and speaks English and Spanish. She lives in Denver with her spouse and two children and enjoys running, swimming, basketball, guitar, and time with family and friends. She graduated magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard University with a social anthropology degree. She received her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, completed her pediatric residency training at University of Colorado, and holds a Master of Public Health in applied biostatistics from Colorado School of Public Health. She works clinically in Denver Health’s Pediatric Emergency Department and Urgent Care and Inpatient Pediatrics Unit and was voted a 5280 Top Doc in 2017. She is medical director of Denver Health Refugee, Immigrant, and Newcomer Health Services and Physician Lead for Schwartz Rounds. She spends a week each summer as a volunteer physician at Sky High Hope Camp, a summer camp for children with cancer and their siblings and chairs the camp’s board of directors.
Michelle Shiffman MD

Dr. Michelle Shiffman is a general outpatient pediatrician and pediatric hospitalist at Denver Health as well as an instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Shiffman attended Oregon Health and Science University for Medical School and completed her pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital Colorado.
Subsequently, Dr. Shiffman joined Denver Health in 2019 and has worked in many areas of patient care, including outpatient pediatrics, inpatient pediatrics, urgent care and the Newborn Nursery. She is also the medical director for Reach Out and Read Colorado and has a particular interest in early literacy, early relational health and school readiness. She serves on the board of the Colorado chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a member of the Colorado chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Advocacy and Legislative Policy Group.
Evan Taylor, MD
Pediatric Hospitalist & Internist
Evan Taylor attended medical school at the University of Colorado followed by a combined pediatrics and internal medicine residency at Rady's Children's Hospital and the University of California San Diego. Following residency, he completed a rural and global health fellowship through USCF where he worked for the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Nation and for Partners in Health in Malawi.
His academic and professional interests include the use of POCUS in resource limited settings, rural, global, and native healthcare, and teaching procedural skills. He has been employed as an internist and pediatric hospitalist at Denver Health since 2023.
Heather Varnell, MD

Medical Director of Westside Pediatrics
Dr Heather Varnell is an outpatient pediatrician, pediatric hospitalist and medical director of the Westside Pediatric Clinic at Denver Health. She is also an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Varnell attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed an internship, residency and chief residency at Children's Hospital Colorado.
Dr. Varnell is an Epic Physician Builder, a member of Denver Health's Epic Provider Advisory Council and is dedicated to continual improvement and efficient use of Epic use for inpatient and outpatient teams. Dr. Varnell is on the national Epic Pediatric Primary Care Steering Board. She is a well-respected medical student and resident educator and clinical care provider in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Varnell joined Denver Health in 2006.
Daniel Young, MD

Dr. Daniel Young is a pediatric hospitalist at Denver Health and instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Young attended Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed pediatrics residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He then completed a pediatric hospital medicine fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis with a focus on medical education and quality improvement.
Dr. Young is board certified in pediatrics and board eligible in pediatric hospital medicine. He has a passion for educating medical students and residents and has published medical education research in Academic Pediatrics and Hospital Pediatrics. Dr. Young currently serves as associate co-chair of the APA Special Interest Group for E-Learning. He splits his clinical time on the Denver Health pediatric inpatient wards and in the newborn nursery. Dr. Young joined Denver Health full time in 2023.

Dr. Crooks attended Chicago Medical School and completed his internship and residency at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Since graduating from residency Dr. Crooks has worked in multiple roles including neonatal hospitalist, pediatric hospitalist, and pediatric sedation specialist. He has multiple non-clinical interests including medical education and quality improvement.
Dr. Crooks has served as clinical faculty of multiple medical schools including University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, Chicago Medical School, and now University of Colorado School of Medicine. He has led multiple local quality improvement projects and most notably served as his institution's site lead for a nationally run quality improvement project, Better Antibiotic Selection in Children. Dr. Crooks joined Denver Health full time in 2024.
Patricia M. Hagan, M.D., M.S

Dr. Trish Hagan is a neonatologist at Denver Health and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
She completed her undergraduate degree at Princeton University, her medical degree at the University of Connecticut, her internship at Yale University and her residency and fellowship at the University of Virginia. She holds a master's degree in management from Nova Southeast University.
She is passionate about clinical medicine, quality improvement and faculty development. She joined Denver Health in 2017.
Hilary Hesse, MD
Neonatologist
Dr. Hilary Hesse is a neonatologist at Denver Health and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Hesse attended Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Medical School where she graduated with honors. She completed an internship and residency at Children's Hospital Colorado and subsequently completed a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine also at the Children's Colorado.
She is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Hesse joined Denver Health in 2023.
Mauricio Palau, MD
Neonatologist
Dr. Palau is a physician specializing in neonatal intensive care at Denver Health. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Palau received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Stanford University School of Medicine, followed by his fellowship training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
He is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. Dr. Palau was recognized for excellence as a clinician in his recent promotion from assistant to associate professor. He has also received a "Top Doc" award from 5280 Magazine and a Compassionate Care award for exceptional patient care at Denver Health. Dr. Palau has interests in optimizing communication with families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and has published in the Journal of Perinatology, Hospital Pediatrics, and Neoreviews. He joined Denver Health full time in 2017.
Danielle S. Roberts, MD
Neonatologist, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Dr. Danielle Roberts received her doctorate from Texas A&M School of Medicine, completed her pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine, and then completed her neonatal perinatal fellowship training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
She is currently an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado and works as a neonatologist at Denver Health Medical Center.
She is passionate about delivering excellent respiratory care to the smallest members of Denver’s population. Dr. Roberts has published her findings related to a mouse model of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and has currently shifted her focus to quality improvement in the delivery room. She is a bilingual clinician (Spanish).
Megan J. Turner, MD, MPH
Neonatologist, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Dr. Meg Turner is a neonatologist at Denver Health and an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Turner completed medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her pediatric residency, chief residency, and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado/Children's Hospital Colorado.
She serves on the board of the Colorado chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and represents inpatient pediatrics on the Denver Health Medical Staff Executive Committee. She is the site lead for DEFINE Colorado, our state NICU family engagement collaborative, and is the site principal investigator for the NIH-funded NICU LIFTS study. She is passionate about neonatal medical education for medical students, residents and fellows. She is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. She has been at Denver Health since 2019.

Laura Adamowski , PA
Neonatal Physician Assistant
Clinical Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
Laura Adamowski is a neonatal physician assistant at Denver Health and serves as a clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. With 26 years of dedicated experience in both the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Level 1/well baby nursery at Denver Health, she brings extensive expertise to her role.
She earned her undergraduate degree in kinesiology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and completed the Child Health Associate/Physician Assistant program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1998. She furthered her education with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2000. Since joining Denver Health in 1998, Adamowski has played a key role in establishing and advancing the advanced care provider position in newborn services. A seasoned instructor of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) for nearly 20 years, she has also contributed to quality improvement projects with the Respiratory Best Practice Group to enhance respiratory care in the neonate. Outside of her professional commitments, she enjoys running, swimming, hiking, and spending quality time with her husband and teenage sons.

Kendra Glassman MPAS, MS, RD
Neonatal Physician Assistant
With over 20 years of experience in the healthcare field, Glassman brings a rich background in both dietetics and as a physician assistant. She earned her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in 2002, followed by a master’s in dietetics from Central Michigan University. Her passion for health care led her to pursue a career as a physician assistant, graduating from Red Rocks University in 2019. Since joining Denver Health in 2021, she has continued to integrate her extensive nutrition expertise into her practice, focusing on quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing growth and nutrition within the NICU. Outside of her professional life, Glassman enjoys exploring the diverse landscapes of Colorado, running, hiking, and spending quality time with her family.
Anne Kay, NP
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Anne Kay is a pediatric nurse practitioner at Denver Health. Kay attended nursing school at the University of Iowa and completed her Master's of Science of Nursing and pediatric nurse practitioner certification at the University of Colorado Anschutz. She is a well-respected nurse practitioner throughout the entire Department of Pediatrics. Kay joined Denver Health in 2020 and fulfills a vital inpatient and outpatient role.
Hany Khattab, MD

Dr. Khattab is a board-certified pediatrician at Denver Health and a clinician instructor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He completed is medical education of the University of Vermont College of Medicine and his pediatric residency at the Phoenix Children's Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center. He sees patients of all ages for primary care, cares for newborns in the hospital, and teaches the pediatric/family medicine residents who rotate at Denver Health. When not being clinical, he enjoys spending time outdoors and traveling abroad with his wife and children.
Sandra Kuester PA-C

Sandi Kuester is a Certified Physician Assistant in the newborn nursery. She was born and raised in Colorado and has never left. She has a bachelor's and master's degree in EPO Biology, certification in general elementary education and in secondary science from the University of Colorado. She taught for several years in Jeffco Public Schools and at the University of Colorado Boulder. She attended the CHAPA program at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and became an Assistant Physician. Shortly after, she started working in the NICU and newborn nursery at Denver Health. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and enjoying the beauty of Colorado.
Pamela Lather
Neonatal Hospitalist
Dr. Pamela Lather is a neonatal hospitalist at Denver Health. Dr. Lather completed medical school at the University of Florida College of Medicine and pediatric residency at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. After residency, Dr. Lather was a primary care pediatrician at UNC for several years where she cared for a large panel of diverse patients and families. She is passionate about newborn care, preventative medicine, and family education. Dr. Lather joined the Denver Health team in 2024. Prior to moving from North Carolina to Colorado, Dr. Lather hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with her husband. She enjoys hiking, board games, and time with family and friends.
Kelly McMullen, MD, CLC
Newborn Nursery + Family Medicine Physician with OB
Dr. Kelly McMullen is a family physician and certified lactation counselor who has dedicated her career to care of people through the transition to parenthood, especially those in marginalized communities. She attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine and residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital. There, she helped to establish the obstetrics training track and maternity care fellowship for family physicians seeking advanced training in operative and higher risk obstetric care. She received her certificate in Lactation Counseling in 2016.
She is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. She is currently part of the faculty for the family medicine residency at Denver Health and works at the Lowry Family Health Clinic, in the Denver Health Newborn Nursery and on labor and delivery and postpartum wards. She serves as the co-chair of the Denver Health Lactation Task Force. Dr. McMullen joined Denver Health in 2021.

Lilliam Samour is a physician assistant in the newborn nursery. She was born in El Salvador and lived there until she was 8 years old. She and her family fled El Salvador and moved to Colorado when the civil war broke out in the late 1970s and have been in Colorado since. She is fluent in Spanish. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from CU Denver and her physician assistant certification from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She has worked at Denver Health since 2000 in the both the NICU and newborn nursery and loves caring for newborns and their families. She is one of 12 children, has 32 nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. In the fall of 2023, Samour received the Career Teaching Scholars Award from the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Daniel Young, MD

Dr. Daniel Young is a pediatric hospitalist at Denver Health and instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Young attended Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed pediatrics residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He then completed a pediatric hospital medicine fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis with a focus on medical education and quality improvement.
Dr. Young is board certified in pediatrics and board eligible in pediatric hospital medicine. He has a passion for educating medical students and residents and has published medical education research in Academic Pediatrics and Hospital Pediatrics. Dr. Young currently serves as associate co-chair of the APA Special Interest Group for E-Learning. He splits his clinical time on the Denver Health pediatric inpatient wards and in the newborn nursery. Dr. Young joined Denver Health full time in 2023.
