Safety tips for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month of May
Riding a motorcycle can be a thrilling experience, but it's important to remember that motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than other vehicles on the road. In Colorado, motorcycle crashes continue to be a significant issue, with data from 2022 indicating a concerning trend in motorcycle fatalities. In this article, we will explore the importance of motorcycle safety and provide some tips for staying safe on the road.
According to data from the Colorado Department of Transportation, there were 149 motorcycle fatalities in Colorado in 2022. This is an increase from the previous year, which had 137 fatalities. Additionally, there were 3,037 motorcycle crashes in 2022, resulting in 2,378 injuries. These statistics demonstrate the critical need for increased awareness of motorcycle safety.
One of the most critical measures you can take to stay safe on a motorcycle is to wear a helmet. In Colorado, all riders and passengers under the age of 18 are required by law to wear a helmet. However, it is strongly recommended that all riders wear a helmet regardless of their age. A helmet can reduce the risk of head injury in a crash.
Another essential aspect of motorcycle safety is proper training. Colorado requires all new motorcycle riders to complete a Basic Rider Course (BRC) before obtaining a motorcycle endorsement. The course covers the basics of motorcycle operation, including braking, turning and accelerating. Experienced riders can also benefit from advanced training courses, which can improve their skills and help them stay safe on the road.
In addition to wearing a helmet and receiving proper training, there are other things you can do to stay safe on a motorcycle. Here are some tips from Denver Health’s trauma team:
- Always wear protective gear, including a jacket, gloves and boots, along with your helmet.
- Follow traffic laws and obey speed limits.
- Be visible to other drivers by wearing bright or reflective clothing and using your headlights during the day.
- Always be aware of your surroundings and anticipate potential hazards on the road.
- Do not ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Maintain your motorcycle regularly, including checking the brakes, tires and lights before every ride.
- Consider taking a defensive driving course to improve your skills and knowledge.
Motorcycle safety is a critical issue in Colorado, and the statistics from 2022 show that there is much work to be done to improve motorcycle safety. Remember to always wear a helmet, receive proper training and follow basic safety precautions when riding a motorcycle. By doing so, you can help reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer experience on the road.
