Denver Health named to Extremity Trauma Research Consortium

Denver Health’s Center for Complex Fractures and Limb Restoration (Cfx) has been selected as one of only 12 clinical centers in the U.S. to participate in a newly established Extremity Trauma Clinical Research Consortium funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Consortium will work with several major military treatment centers and the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research to conduct clinical research studies relevant to the treatment and outcomes of severe orthopedic trauma sustained in battle.

These studies will help establish treatment guidelines and translate new and emerging technologies into clinical practice.

“This is a great opportunity for Denver Health to be involved with a group of premier trauma centers across the nation, and to be recognized for excellence in clinical research and extremity trauma care,” said Steven Morgan, M.D., interim director, Cfx. “Lessons learned in civilian trauma can be rapidly transferred to wounded soldiers and vice versa for trauma cases.  It’s a win-win situation for all especially the patients – soldiers and civilians who benefit from evidence-based clinical advances in trauma care.”

More than 80 percent of all service members injured in Operating Iraqi Freedom and Operating Enduring Freedom sustain significant extremity trauma; many sustain injuries to multiple limbs.
