Lactation Support

Denver Health’s Breast Feeding Department is staffed with International Board-Certified Lactation Counselors (IBCLCs) and Registered Nurse Certified Lactation Consultants who are committed to promoting, protecting and supporting a mother’s decision to breastfeed her infant.

Denver Health currently practices the Colorado Can Do Five, which includes five tips for successful breastfeeding:

  • Breastfeed within the first hour after delivery
  • Room-in with your baby to promote mother/baby bonding
  • Breastfeed often: every hour and a half to three hours
  • Avoid using a pacifier in the first month
  • Lactation specialists are available in the hospital to support new mothers who are just learning to breastfeed their babies. Ask for the telephone number to call for breastfeeding support
