Pre-Travel Health Consultation and Medications

The Denver Health Travel clinic provides in depth travel consultation evaluation customized to your travel itinerary, needs and level of travel experience. Consultations are provided for individuals, families and groups of all ages.

The Denver Health Travel Clinic provides consultations for unique travelers including:

  • Athletes
  • Corporate travelers
  • Elderly travelers
  • Infants and children
  • Immigrants/expatriates/refugees
  • Pregnant travelers
  • Travelers with chronic diseases
  • Travelers with disabilities
  • Travelers who are immunocompromised
  • Potential parents traveling for international adoption

The travel clinic provides consultation for travelers with all types of travel experiences and unique itineraries including:

  • Diving
  • Extended stay travel
  • Altitude travel
  • Extreme travel
  • Mass gatherings (e.g. the Hajj)
  • Wilderness/remote regions travel

The Consultation

The pre-travel consultation usually takes 30-45 minutes and is conducted by the travel nurse, who has immediate access to the team of specialists if there are any health specific questions or concerns. It provides an in depth review of:

Medical History

  • the medications you are taking
  • any fitness or other contraindications to travel
  • allergies
  • immunization history
  • evaluation of travel itineraries and risk assessment (rural vs. urban issues)
  • evaluation of psychocultural issues (culture shock/adaptation, repatriation)

Your questions and concerns, including

  • the immunizations you need for travel
  • malaria, high altitude illness, or travelers diarrhea and the prescriptions to avoid illness.
  • letters explaining medical conditions and medical waivers to ease your encounter with border officials.

Information included:

  • Itinerary specific illnesses
  • Disease prevention and self treatment
  • Climate and altitude information
  • Water, food and environmental precautions
  • Insect precautions and animal contact precautions
  • Close interpersonal contact precautions (ie. sexually transmitted diseases)
  • Travel kit list and personal protective measures
  • Safety and security tips
  • Health care resources
  • Consulate resources
  • Internationally recognized medical facility resources
  • U.S. Department of State advisories/ up-to-date news, weather and safety alerts
  • Supplemental insurance such as life, health, evacuation and diving insurance

All of the information about your medical history, current medical issues, allergies, medications, immunization information and recommendations are kept in a confidential electronic file and immunization registry which can be easily accessed for further pre-travel questions, post-travel concerns or future travel consultations.
