Denver Health's Hand and Microvascular Services

Denver Health's Hand and Microvascular program is the Rocky Mountain Region's only 24/7/365 center to treat injuries to hands and arms.  Our team of experts have  many documented successes for reattaching and revascularizing limbs following motor vehicle, farming, industrial, rodeo accidents and recreational mishaps.  Our surgeons are available to provide free consultations for referring physicians.

Denver Health's Hand and Microvascular Program includes:

  • Replantation of fingers, hand and upper extremity
  • Extremity and soft tissue reconstruction
  • Vascular injuries of limbs
  • Traumatic brachial plexus injuries
  • Compartment syndrome and Crush injuries

In addition to emergency hand care,our experts have years of cumulative experience in treating difficult chronic conditions of the hand and upper extremity including: 

  • Nonunions and delayed unions
  • Bone and soft tissue infections
  • Peripheral nerve injuries
  • Volkmann’s ischemic contracture
  • Function restoring free tissue transfers
  • Secondary microsurgical
  • Reconstruction of limbs,  including toe transfers 

Our Experts

Kyros Ipaktchi, M.D., trained and obtained Board Certification in General Surgery and Orthopaedic Traumatology at the Charite University Hospital in Berlin, Germany. Focus on hand, upper extremity reconstructive surgery including microvascular tissue transfer and replantation since 2000. Attending surgeon for plastic and reconstructive surgery and director of burn ICU 2006/2007 Hannover Medical Center, Germany. Postdoctoral researcher and surgical critical care fellow, University of Michigan. Associate Professor for Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Colorado since 2007.

Karen Hormachea, OTR, CHT, graduated from State University of New York at Buffalo where she received a B.S. in Occupational Therapy and a B.A. in Spanish. She holds the following certifications: HTCC, Inc. Certification in Hand Therapy,  NBCOT Certification in Occupational Therapy, registered as an Occupational Therapist through DORA Colorado.  Karen has over 30 years of experience treating hand/UE injured patients and prefers to treat the more complicated hand trauma patients and the challenges they present.

Lance Maloney M.S., graduated from Colorado State University where he received a B.S. in Social Sciences and Philosophy and a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. In addition to being a registered occupational therapist, he is also a certified hand therapist and a certified Fieldwork Educator. Lance is a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists, and employed treating hand and upper extremity trauma at Denver Health for 18 years.  He is currently the designated Work Evaluation Specialist with the City and County of Denver and State of Colorado for the administration of Functional Capacity/Job site evaluations, and pre-employment screens.

Sarah Sanderman, OTR, graduated with a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri in the spring of 2010. She is certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy as well as the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.  She is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.  Sarah focuses on repetitive strain injuries, stroke or brain injury rehabilitation and mild trauma.

Brooke Monroe, PA-C, graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina where she received a B.S in Physician Assisting.  She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and maintains certifications with the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants as well as ACLS/BLS with the American Heart Association.  Brooke previously has worked in the fields of neurology, family practice and internal medicine, but now has a focused role providing care to patients with upper extremity orthopaedic injuries.
