Philip S. Mehler, M.D., CEDS earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1983, and has been a physician at Denver Health for more than 20 years. 

 

He has dedicated most of his career to the research and care of patients suffering from severe eating disorders.

In addition to his normal duties as Chief Medical Officer at Denver Health, Dr. Mehler continues to conduct research into the treatment of the most severe eating disorders cases and the complications that can arise in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

He has authored more than 175 publications including many on the treatment and effects of severe eating disorders including authoring the textbook, Medical Complications of Eating Disorders, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. He is also a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders and the Eating Disorders Research Society.


Jennifer L. Gaudiani, M.D. completed her undergraduate work at Harvard College, earned her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 2002, and completed her residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Yale. Dr. Gaudiani is board-certified in Internal Medicine and practices hospitalist medicine at Denver Health. Dr. Gaudiani has lectured broadly on the topic of eating disorders and has published extensively on the medical complications of eating disorders. Dr. Gaudiani is the Assistant Medical Director of the A.C.U.T.E. Center.

 
Margherita Mascolo, M.D., completed her undergraduate work at the University of St. Thomas and earned her medical degree in 2005 at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center.  She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver.  She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado.  She practices at Denver Health as a hospitalist.

Amit Bahia, M.D., earned his medical degree at the Bangalore Medical College in India, in 2000.  Following a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and practices Hospital Medicine at Denver Health.  He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado.

Jessica Campbell, M.D., MA, completed her undergraduate and master’s coursework at Stanford University and earned her medical degree in 2004 at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Campbell completed her residency at the University of Colorado Hospital. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and works as a hospitalist at Denver Health. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado.






Barbara Cleary, M.D., completed her medical degree with honors at the University of Kansas and her residency at the University of Colorado. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, and has worked as a Hospitalist at Denver Health since 2001 where she also directs the Medicine Consult service and is a member of the Ethics Committee. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado.
Psychotherapist

In addition to the once daily individual therapy sessions provided by the staff of the Eating Recovery Center, A.C.U.T.E. offers another once daily individual therapeutic session with a staff psychotherapist. 

Susan L. Bennett, Ph.D., LPC, completed her dual degree undergraduate work at Regis University in organization development and psychology. Dr. Bennett earned her master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology in 2005 and 2010, respectively.  She completed her externship and residency at Denver Health and is currently the Postdoctoral Fellow for Behavioral Health Services.

Dr. Bennett is a mental health generalist working with all psychiatric disorders. She also specializes in eating disorders where she has practiced in outpatient settings for nearly eight years. Her research includes health psychology, moderation and mediation of physical and psychological strain, impulse control, and collaborative treatment planning.

Dr. Bennett is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Health Psychology Division of APA, the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and the Academy for Eating Disorders.
Nurse Manager

Kim Carroll, RN, BSN, Nurse Manager, received her Diploma in Nursing from Copley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1979 and her BSN from University of Denver in 1983.  Kim has been involved in the care of patients with eating disorders since 2006.  She oversees all nursing care provided on the unit.


Registered Dieticians

Registered dieticians work with each A.C.U.T.E. patient on a daily basis to develop an individualized menu plan. All meals are eaten privately, under the support and supervision of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

Amy Winkelman, RD, completed her undergraduate degree in Dietetics and Nutrition, Fitness, and Health at Purdue University in 2005. She is pursing her graduate degree in counseling. She has worked with Dr. Mehler and the A.C.U.T.E. team for several years. She has experience in nutrition therapy in gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, obstetrics, and nephrology.


Debbie Andersen, MS, RD, earned her undergraduate degree in Food Management and Nutrition with an option in Dietetics at Oregon State University. She also completed a dietetic internship and earned a Master’s of Science degree in Clinical Nutrition at New York University in 2002. Debbie has nine years of clinical nutrition experience including diabetes, weight management, nutrition support and critical care nutrition. She began working with eating disorders in 2005.
Physical Therapy Services

All A.C.U.T.E. patients receive an evaluation by our physical therapists for assessment of balance, fall risk and mobility. Individualized therapy sessions are then established for as long as patients need them to achieve goals of safety and function. In some cases, light resistance training for strength may be started.

Beth Anne Carlson, PT, MPT, CSCS, completed her Master’s of Physical Therapy degree at Marquette University in 2002.  Beth Anne has worked to develop criteria for appropriately progressing patients in this program back to independence from critically ill medical states.  She also holds a certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. 








Katherine Ogle, PT, DPT, received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado in 2009. She has since worked as an A.C.U.T.E. care physical therapist at Denver Health, recently joining the A.C.U.T.E. team.  Katherine focuses on functional training and has experience working with a wide variety of patient populations.
