About the Hematology/Oncology Division

The Hematology-Oncology Division provides care for patients with all types of cancer, hematological malignancies and other disorders of the blood, such as anemia and bleeding or clotting problems.  Outpatient and inpatient services are provided at the Denver Health Medical Center, including general medical oncology and hematology clinics, medical breast clinic, and lung cancer clinic at the Davis Pavilion, and the Department of Corrections outpatient clinic.  At Denver Health, all cancer patients benefit from the expertise and collaboration of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncologic surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, oncology nurses, infusion center nurses, oncologic pharmacists, social workers, rehabilitation specialists and patient navigators.

Services

  • Hematology-Oncology Clinics are conducted every day of week except Friday.

  • Medical Breast Cancer Clinic is held once weekly.

  • Lung Cancer Clinic is held once weekly.

  • Chemotherapy Infusion Center provides chemotherapy and biological therapy administration services every day of the week.

  • Bone marrow biopsies and intrathecal chemotherapy administration are provided by Hematology-Oncology physicians both in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Multi-disciplinary Tumor Conferences are conducted weekly, for general oncology, breast cancer and head and neck cancer.

  • Clinical trial participation is available for most cancers and hematological malignancies.

  • A Cancer Resource Center has been established to provide information and support resources to patients and families.

  • Radiation therapy is provided by affiliation through the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

Research

  • The Hematology-Oncology Division receives funding through the National Cancer Institute and affiliates with the University of Colorado Cancer Center to participate in clinical trials to improve treatment for many types of cancer and hematological malignancies.

  • The Division also participates in a number of pharmaceutical industry-sponsored clinical trials to evaluate new and promising types of cancer treatment.

  • Division researchers receive funding from the National Cancer Institute to study the benefit of patient navigation in improving the care of cancer patients.

  • National Cancer Institute funding also supports research to evaluate an interactive multimedia Internet-based patient information and decision support program for patients with newly diagnosed breast and prostate cancer and for breast cancer patients after completion of treatment.

  • Division researchers also participate in research defining the role of biomarkers and hormones in cancer treatment and outcomes, training of patient navigators
