In the United States, as many as 10 million females and one million males are fighting a life-and-death battle with an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. Body dissatisfaction and sub-clinical eating disorder attitudes and behaviors affect males and females of all ages, races, and social class. Prevention and early intervention are vital.

• The mortality rate for anorexia nervosa is 5.86% higher than any other mental illness
• The annual death rate is 12 times higher for anorexia nervosa than all other causes in women ages 15-24 years
• In the lowest body weight patients, like those treated at ACUTE, there is a 45 times higher rate of death compared with age-matched controls
