The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program at Denver Health is a 12-month educational program designed to help talented nursing graduates transition into professional practice.
The program begins three times per year based upon organizational need and is intended to support the professional development of ALL new graduate nurses hired into the hospital setting. The program is a supplement to our unit-based orientations.
We welcome new graduate nurses at Denver Health! We have successfully hired and oriented new graduate nurses in most units for many years. We are pleased to now offer our own Denver Health New Graduate Nurse Residency Program as a supplement to the unit-based orientation.
The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is designed to help talented new nursing graduates transition from novice toward expert nurse. Our program offers a strategic mix of evidenced-based didactic and hands-on education, peer support and seasoned nurse mentorship. It is designed and conducted by talented nurse leaders from across the Denver Health organization. Not only will you grow in your patient care skills, you will also build your critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and leadership skills. In summary, you will receive strong support for your transition into your first year of nursing practice.

Our New Graduate Nurse Residency Program fits with the national recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (October, 2010). We are pleased that our opportunity allows us to hire new graduate nurses throughout the year as needs arise.
Our employees and volunteers as internal applicants have preference in hiring. This is not an exclusive practice as we do hire external new graduates too. Because we hire new grads throughout the year, we encourage you to visit our Career Center regularly.
Denver Health employees and volunteers with either BSN or ADN will be considered. Applicants who are not employed at Denver Health need to be BSN-prepared.
Once you apply, you will be entered into a pool of new graduate nurses. You may be selected to interview for our next vacant new graduate nurse positions. If you are offered a position on one of our units, you would also be accepted into the new graduate program.
Applicants must have NO previous RN experience since this is a training program for new grads who have never worked as an RN before. Candidates with any previous RN experience will not be considered for this nurse residency program. The successful candidate must commit to our new graduate program and to the unit assigned for a minimum of 2 years.

In accepting employment to Denver Health Medical Center as a new graduate nurse, a written agreement committing to continued employment to the original unit of hire for the duration of two years will be obtained. This time period includes the year of supplemental education and support within the New Graduate Resitrandency Program, as well as an additional year of employment following the successful completion of the program in order to ensure continued support from our nursing leadership throughout the course of the new graduate nurse’s transition into their professional nursing career.
Each of the specific inpatient hospital areas included in the New Graduate Residency program vary in their unique specialties. These areas include:
The class structure consists of one 4-hour class per month for the duration of the 12-month program. Each of the class sessions are taught by a team of nurse leaders who serve Denver Health in a variety of roles. The curriculum content has been developed from a review of current literature, identifying the common situational themes experienced by new graduate nurses and successful strategies to support adult learning. Key topics include:
Expectations of the program support the increasing level of engagement for each new graduate nurse into quality and/or performance improvement initiatives, committee participation, and professional portfolio development throughout the course of the year.
At the completion of the Residency Program, each new graduate nurse will be honored through a graduation ceremony acknowledging their successful transition and future commitment to the profession of nursing.
All new graduate nurses hired into the Denver Health Inpatient, Emergency, and Perioperative areas will be included in the Residency Program.
All new graduate nurse applications must be submitted through the New Graduate Nurse Residency posting. By applying to the New Graduate posting, the new graduate nurse applicant will be entered into a pool of applicants to be screened and considered for hire by nursing leadership as new graduate positions become available on each of the respective areas included in the Residency Program.

I graduated with my nursing degree 6 months ago and have been working in an outpatient clinic for only a few months. I desire to transition into the inpatient hospital setting and would like to be considered for the New Graduate Residency Program. Am I eligible to participate?

I will graduate next month or I currently reside outside of Colorado. Am I eligible to apply for the New Graduate Residency Program?
Yes, out-of state applicants are eligible to apply for the program. You are welcome to apply for the Nurse Residency Program once you have obtained your license as a Registered Nurse and it is officially posted to the Colorado Board of Nursing website or a participating compact state.
I submitted my application and am worried it was not received. How can I confirm you received all of my application?
Due to the volume of applicants, we are not able to confirm the receipt of individual emails, or provide updates on the status of applications. The Human Resources Department receives hundreds of applications on a continual basis for positions throughout the entire Denver Health organization.
